Emoticons or Smiley Faces - Showing Emotions With Text Chat

An emoticon is often referred to as a 'smiley face', is used to convey an emotion within a text message. Emoticons are used to convey the facial expressions or tone of voice that we would use in face to face or telephone conversations. For example, if you were joking with someone and send a text message saying "GAL (get a life)" the person receiving your message may think you were being rude to them. However If you send the same message with a "happy smiley" : ) following the text, the person would then understand you were "smiling" - or joking around when you said that. Using emoticons to show emotion in a text message can help the receiver to interpret your meaning and intention. Here are few examples of different smiley faces and their meanings:
